7.5 billion years ago, 3 billion years before our star, the Sun, was even born, a gigantic star collapsed. Triggering the brightest flash since the "Big Bang" in our Universe. For a brief moment on the 19th, it was the furthest into space that could be seen without the aid of a telescope. It also produced a GRB (Gamma Ray Burst). There were 4 other GRB's that day, the most ever recorded in a single cycle. That was also the day that Arthur C. Clarke died. BTW - 7.5 billion years is halfway to the edge of the Universe.

In February of 2006, Aloha Airlines pulled itself out of bankruptcy. The next 2 years brought a third major air carrier into the State (go!, a subsidiary of Mesa) to compete with them and Hawaiian Airlines. Yesterday, Aloha filed for bankruptcy again.

Maui hotel occupancy rates dropped almost 5%, compared with the same week last year. That okay. The average room rate for the same period grew by 7.2%. Fewer people spending more to do less. Which is why all the restaurants and assorted visitor activities are sharply cutting back on their overhead (i.e. lay-offs).

Checked on that insurance payment I have been expecting from Prudential. The check has been issued and should go into the mail on Monday or Tuesday. Then add another 3-5 days to get here from Philly. In my initial conversation with them they stated that it would take 12-15 days to process. The operative word that they forgot to mention was that they meant 12-15 business days. Then add 3 days for the check to clear after deposit. At least it is on the way (I hope).

MY 2-CENTS WORTH


You've all seen this video on the news, this week. A couple of things that most have overlooked is that this type of "take down" is very common in law enforcement. Also, notice how short of a distance the patrol car traveled after striking the suspect. This indicates that the vehicle wasn't traveling very fast. Of course, the "phoebes" are going to go after the troopers for violating a suspects civil rights. Just like they did to the LAPD officers in the Rodney King incident.

As do most local cops, I have an intense dislike of the FBI. For a multitude of reasons.

Are you interested in astronomy? Lots of people are but either live in places where they can't truly see the night sky or they haven't access to a telescope. Here is an article from Wired.com that gives access to the night sky via your computer. And most of them are free!

Okay, the equinox and astronomy, what gives? Just my way of explaining why Easter is early this year. Easter, unless you are a member of the Orthodox Church, occurs on the first Sunday following the first full moon on or after the first day of Spring. Today is the equinox, tomorrow is the full moon and Sunday is, well, Easter. See. Its very simple. (gosh, I hope I didn't misplace the decimal)

The VOA (Voice of America) news release about Bush's speech at the Pentagon was the most neutral one I could find. The VOA, for those who are too young to remember the "cold-war" days, is a government run news provider. Its main function is to put a positive pro-US spin on the news. Even they had problems.

IF YOU BLINK...

YOU'LL MISS IT


The above images, plus the sunset in today's THE PICTURE GALLERY, were taken last week (3/11/08) by Judy's boyfriend, Richard. In the sunset pic he was able to capture a portion of the elusive "green flash" that is sometimes seen just as the last bit of the sun disappears below the horizon. It doesn't extend beyond the width of the sun and lasts just a fleeting moment. An eye-blink can cause you to miss it.

The whales will be departing over the next month. Headed back to Alaska and their krill feeding grounds. There are a multitude of reasons for people to visit Mau'i but I think seeing the humpbacks has to be among the "Top-5".

Went shopping with Judy yesterday evening. Bear was okay until I was ready to leave then he went into hissing mode again. Seems to have something to do with me getting ready to go outside. Also, I think there might be a female kitty in our area looking for boyfriends. This may be making him a bit "on edge". Until this past Monday, Bear has been the most docile of cats. When he became grumpy this evening, I just ignored him.

5 years ago, about 9:00 AM (Washington time), the command was given by President G. W. Bush to invade Iraq. Almost 4,000 US troop deaths later, he will give a speech today at the Pentagon. Exalting the brilliance of his leadership. Even the most conservative of the media are finding difficulty in merging his reality with ours. A whole lot of stories.

One of my favorite authors passed yesterday. Arthur C. Clarke was 90. A gifted science-fiction writer, most famous for 2001, A Space Odyssey. He conceived the use of geo-stationary satellites for global communication.

Clarke, and his contemporaries, Asimov and Heinlein, were the best.
