As scheduled, I started work at 7:00pm. There were a lot of holdover drivers from day shift. They were desperate. One ended her 10 hour day with just two pu-pu runs. Everyone had been idle for at least 4 hours and some over 6 hours. If their shift set the benchmark for the day, then the night shift did pretty damn good.
While it took a bit, my first run (at 9:15pm) was to OGG. I also ended my shift with a run to OGG. First time I ever "bookended" a shift that nicely. Stocked the center with 7 decent in-town runs
I could hear a live performance at the other end, on the lower level, of the mall. Native Hawaiian chants and drums.
That little light above my head illuminated.
Thats right, this is "Wailea on Wednesday.
The Shops at Wailea provide a very diversified array of music entertainment every Wednesday evening.
Harp
Jazz
Country
String Ensembles
Rock
Native
All of it is great, but the native shows are the most popular.
Chants, drums, rhythms, the various forms of the Hula.
Toward the end of the show is when "volunteers" are selected to "shake their groove thing" with the hula girls. All the participants suffer some mild public humiliation by their dance but a rare few are very adroit.
This was the point when I looked over the rail to see the show on the lower level. Took out my camera and started videoing. While the show was well lit, my angle of view diminished the light.
Anyway, where this video stops is when my batteries died. Walked over to the ABC Store (Hawai'i's largest "stop-n-rob"), bought replacements and by the time I reached the rail, the show was over.
It was a mellow night. Pacing for calls was easy without getting bored between runs.
Started the night off on the right foot with a run to OGG. After that it was the usual bar runs until 2:00am.
At 3:16am I took a couple from The Grand to the Mau'i Memorial Medical Center (didn't we use to just call them hospitals?) ER (Emergency Room) in Wailuku (our county seat). Dropped them at 3:44am. Usually, when you make a drop there, you know that they will probably stay for 2 to 6 hours. Not tonight! These folks were ready to go at 4:20am and I picked them up at 4:59am. Had to finish the run I was on, when they called, and then drive the 20 miles back to the ER.
In and out of the ER in 34 minutes! That must be a record! I'll notify the media. ;)
They are here as part of the NEXTEL-SPRINT group, currently in residence at The Grand. BROTHERS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT
Chrissy-Max-Dave-Tiffany
Picked up this great foursome from Lulu's and took them back to their condo. The two guys are deputy sheriff's on the mainland, so we hit it right off. Max is with the Harris County Sheriff's Office in Houston, TX, USA. Dave is with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office in Stockton, CA, USA.
With the round trip to the hospital and the airport run, plus everything else, I had a very profittable night. Great start to a new work week. ==============================================
Thats how Judy and I greeted each other last night.
"I don't want my picture of the 'net'."
She was giving me her "I am not mad, but I am deadly serious" look.
"So, you read my blog today." I laughingly answered.
After that, we talked about "tit and tat" and then went to dinner. Had a very enjoyable evening.
Oh! For the record. This is the picture I didn't get: KOREAN BARS
Korean Bars are a Japanese creation and found their way to Hawai'i prior to WWII. The bars were staffed by young and nubile Korean ladies. Their purpose was to encourage their clients to spend as much money in the bar as possible. The girls received a percentage of the liquor sales. The clientele was strictly Japanese business men. Sex on the property was forbidden but clothed fondling and foreplay was acceptable.
Today, the same concept holds true. But it is not uncommon for one of the girls to develop a relationship with one of her guests that is then taken "off-property". Usually to the guest's residence or vacation condo/hotel.
As I posted earlier, some of these relationships are doomed to failure from the start. Sometimes their new friend's credit card is "maxed out".
Start a new week tonight. Always hope for the best! ==============================================
Last Tuesday was Judy's (my best and dearest friend) birthday. I'll just say that she is over 18 and is not yet eligible for Social Security. ;)
Tonight I am taking her and her husband, Dave, out to dinner.
If they allow it, I will post their pic tomorrow. ============================================== THINGS I NEED TO DO:
Clean Personal Car
Vacuum Apartment
Change Bear's "litter box"
Install New USB Board in PC (really need the ports)
Take Some "Daylight" Videos And Pics Of Kihei
Check Photo Store To See If They Have The Adapter I Need To Add Another Memory Stick To Camera
Buy A Gift
Go To Dinner
============================================== WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS
I have yet to open the instruction manual for my camera. As a typical male, that option is reserved for last. I just keep "playing" with it and my technique improves every day.
Here are some new ambient light shots of the bars in the "Triangle".
Neptune's
Southside Tiki Lounge
Kahale's
Lulu's
Bada Bing's
Bada Bing's started out as a club and then became a "New Jersey Style" pizzeria and italian restaurant. They do a brisk business and no longer have to deal with the bar crowd, since they close about 9:00pm.
I want a good photo of the LAB (Life's A Beach) but the only way to get it is to stand in the middle of the intersection. Not a wise option! ============================================== MY DREAM
I'll never be able to afford it, but I can always dream about it. sigh ============================================== THINGS I'LL PROBABLY GET DONE TODAY
Clean Personal Car
Change "litter Box"
Buy Gift
Go To Dinner
Don't want to over-exert myself. ============================================== Later.....
Okay, I realize that is a broad generalization and I have probably insulted a few of my visitors. But its TRUE. Here is yet another example.
I mentioned in the prior post about the cancelled flights. Mary M., an associate, and I took an 8-pax from OGG to the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel and we both made arrangements to pick them up at 9:00pm, Saturday night, and return their party to OGG.
Ka'anapali Beach Hotel
Mary even called them Saturday afternoon to confirm the reservation and told them that we would be there no later than 8:45pm.
We both arrived at 8:35pm, ready to go. We waited and waited and waited. 9:00pm came and went. Finally, at 9:20pm, we called it a "10-13" and headed back. These no-so-nice folks FROM NEW JERSEY had wasted 3+ hours and 75 miles of our gas, each. ============================================== KA'ANAPALI BEACH HOTEL
The Ka'anapali Beach Hotel is designed to resemble the '30's style of hotels in Hawai'i and is located in the planned resort community of the same name. ============================================== THE SHERATON
They have this really neat shadow screen projection that can only be viewed as you depart their property. I stopped to get a couple of pics of the street entrance to Whaler's Village and was lucky enough to have a gentleman from southwest Montana approach me and request that I take him to Ka'anapali Shores, which is located about 3 miles to the north in the town of Honokowai, a condo community. Made a little bit of money anyway. :) ============================================== FRONT STREET - LAHAINA
Lahaina Town was the original capitol of Hawai'i, during its days as an independent kingdom. This is the setting for James Mitchner's epic novel HAWAII.
It was also the main whaling port in the Pacific. Those whalers and the missionaries didn't mix well. One missonary's home was shelled by cannonballs from a whaling boat, in protest of the missionaries trying to protect the virginity of Hawai'ian women. From what I have read, the women were as willing as the sailors. Just visit any seaport in the world today and nothing has changed. The streets of the town are very, very narrow, as you can see. I took these while driving and they are a bit blurry, sorry. ============================================== BACK IN KIHEI
Got back to Kihei about 10:30pm and took over the phone since it was my night to "dispatch".
Had the usual assortment of bar runs.
Tsunami's had some sort of problem, at their 1:00am close, requiring both the police and the paramedics. I never found out what it was and honestly really didn't care after a long week.
The other drivers were all gone by 2:15am and I stayed mildly active.
At 3:30am I changed over to cab #5 (a mini-van) and headed back to Ka'anapali to pick up four people from the Westin Mau'i for a trip to OGG. Turned out only two needed a cab.
This was a very pleasant couple from Westminister, CA, USA, a city just south of Los Angeles. We "talked story" the entire 45 minute ride.
That was a great way to end the shift and my week.
An intelligent conversation with sober, intelligent people. ==============================================
Wouldn't this be a horrible place to be stranded? All this sand? Surrounded by thousands of miles of water. It must really be a bitch.
Friday night got off to a slow start and gradually deteriorated.
None of us were moving. By 11:00pm I had a total of 5 runs.
About 11:10pm the airline concierge service at OGG called. Two different flights (America West and Air Canada) had failed to depart. 200 people needed to be taken to hotels, in KAANAPALI!!! Thats an $85+ trip. Dispatched all of us (6 cabs) to the airport. and we spent until 3:00am moving people.
Unfortunately, the concierge was only able to find accommodations for the America West passengers and those from Air Canada had to sleep in the airport.
All these trips are paid by airline vouchers and include a 15% automatic gratuity.
Plus, we all arranged return trips, for tonight, back to the airport.
To put it mildly, DAMN! It was a good night.
The photos are, obviously, post cards from Mau'i. Couldn't find anything interesting to take a photo of. ==============================================
The first three hours were steady with "dinner runs" from the hotels and, awhile later, back to the hotels.
Then came the "10 o'clock 'magic' hour" and the switch was turned off. The night began to bore. Maybe a run an hour until "bar close" and that actually started around 1:00am when some of the places began closing for lack of business.
Just two runs during the solo hours.
The nice thing is that, do to some recent changes, my relief checked in at 4:15am. He met me at Minit-Stop, where I was refueling, and took over the phone, We BS'd for about 1/2 hour and then I headed for the barn.
When I did my paper work, I found out that I had a rather decent shift. That's kewl. :)
There wasn't one incident or run that left a lasting impression. GOOD NEWS: It was a mellow night BAD NEWS: Not a damn thing to write about
Its a ying/yang thing
============================================== GAS PRICE
I purchased 12.992 US gallons and paid $45.85 or about 90.22 cents per liter (litre). You can check the current currency conversion rate for the US dollar in your country to see the difference in price. Compared to the mainland, we are expensive. To the rest of the world, we are cheap.
hmmmmm
I wonder how "cheap" is going to be translated by Babel Fish? maybe I should say that our gas price is vastly lower than the worldwide average. ==============================================
1,000, or so, associates of COUNTRYWIDE have taken over the GRAND WAILEA and the FOUR SEASONS for their annual awards gala. These are the rare groups that the island loves. Their daily itinerary is very open. They leave "campus" and explore the island, savoring everything that is available. These are some of the raging young bucks of business.
Boy, are we glad they showed up!
Last night was their first offical night on the island and their company welcomed them with a fireworks show.
Of course, I knew nothing about this and was sitting at the Tsunami entrance when a big bang occurred. Trust me. Big bangs are something that cops really hate hearing. My head snapped around and I saw the fading embers. Seizing the opportunity, I grabbed my camera and started taking some pics. This was the best of the bunch.
Then my little epithany light started flashing over my head.
"uh, dummy. This camera takes video!"
I immediately switched over to video mode and shot the following.
Picked up a solo man from the GRAND at about 9:40pm. He wanted to have some fun and, naturally, all the local staff told him that their favorite spot was HAPA'S.
During the journey, he asked questions.
"What is the bar like?"
"What type of crowd will I find?"
"How do they treat tourists?"
"Will I be safe there?"
That is the first time THAT ever happened!
I gave him my honest opinion and we diverted to the "Triangle". ============================================== "PISSED OFF" LADY
This lady of indeterminate age, was waiting for me below DENNY'S at about 12:30am. She wanted to go to Wailuku, which abuts Kahului on the west. From the moment she entered the cab until I dropped her off, 30 minutes later, she yelled.
Constantly.
The only words I understood were "fucker" and "bullshit". The rest of the words were Korean and I am willing to bet that she "stayed in character" in that language also. During her brief moments of rationality I think I pieced together her story.
She works for one of the Korean bars on lower Main street in Wailuku (I'll explain more about them this weekend). She apparently left the bar with a new "friend" and went to his apartment in Kihei. His credit card didn't "clear". She only had $50 on her (the fare came out to $49.70) and it was too late to go back to work and develop another "relationship".
As I said.
She was PISSED! ============================================== SLIPPERS
Your supermarkets carry these year round too, don't they? ============================================== SPAM
Haute cuisine for "locals".
Also, their 5th "food group".
More SPAM is sold per capita in Hawai'i than anywhere else in the world.
Twinkie "shelf life".
============================================== CAMERA
I use a Sony CyberShot DSC-540 for both the pics and videos.
It is a cheap ($150) entry level camera. 4.1 megapixel.
It comes with 36 mb internal memory. I've added a 512 mb memory stick ($50 at Walmart). I plan on adding another memory stick when I can, locally, find the adaptor.
It fits comfortably in my pocket, both shirt and pants, and that all I use. No laptop, no power inverter, no cables and no loss of the front passenger seat.
Not bad, eh? ============================================== MY CAB
It is a 1997 Mercury Gran Marquis with 145,620 miles on it, as of this morning. The company purchased it in February, 2005. It only had 36,000 miles on it.
Ford sedans have a problem here in Hawai'i with the edge of the roof liner pealing away from the window molding, over which the edge is glued.
I've tried reglueing, to no positive result.
As London Cabby mentioned, in an earlier comment, this wouldn't pass the strict regulations that he works under.
"One-Nine" is the only cab I drive. ============================================== OVERALL
Pretty good night. Always steady, very few lulls.
Tips weren't as good as Tuesday's, but I am not complaining.
Made the second "lay-away" payment on that pack of chewing gum. ==============================================
The ebb and flow of business was great last night. From 7:00pm to 2:00am we all kept moving. Very little downtime. And none of the drunks were obnoxious, thats rare.
Tips were OUTSTANDING!!! My two smallest runs were $5.30 each and both gave me $15.00!! The long runs tipped over 25%. The biggest tip was $25, on a run of $15.
Some nights it just pays to be "lucky" rather than "good."
I wish all nights could be like this one was. ============================================== FAVORITE TRIP OF THE NIGHT
I had just cleared a run at "White Rock", a beach about 1/2 mile south of the KEA LANI and was dispatched to make a pickup at MULLIGANS, just around the corner. Destination: unknown?
As is par with pick-ups there, the people did not immediately appear. I was just about to call a "10-13" (no show/no load) when three lovely young ladies started down the steps. Just a wee bit tipsy.
These lasses were on holiday from Vancouver, BC, Canada, and were looking for some fun and MULLIGANS was not THAT place tonight.
Rachelle - April - Jaine
I suggested that they would have better luck at "The Triangle" and off we headed.
They are here for the rest of the week and hopefully I'll have contact with them again. They are really fun.
p.s. they also tipped very generously ============================================== GAS PRICE
I heard on the radio last night that gas prices on the mainland could easily top $3.00 per gallon and might even reach $4.00. If that happens then we will be paying over $5.00 and probably close to $6.00. This may put a bit of a damper on my vacation plans to take my grandsons to Yellowstone, Carlsbad Caverns and the Grand Canyon this summer. ============================================== LATE NIGHT RADIO
Since I am not a big fan of the business of sports, I do NOT listen to sports talk radio. Since most radio stations today are just programmed computers, with mp3 music and mp3 announcers, and play the same 40 song playlist continously for a month, I get bored. When I do listen to the radio at night, it is usually Coast-To-Coast AM with George Noorey weeknights and Art Bell on the weekends. I don't believe any of what is said there but it can be an enjoyable way to pass the night. I know it is a favorite of a lot of truckers on the mainland. ============================================== TWO - COUNT 'EM - TWO NEW VIDEOS
NOTE: Both of these videos were made in the pre-sunrise hours and are a bit on the dark side.
ROLL ON DOWN THE HIGHWAY
The last video shown here was of the "low road" (Kihei road) entrance into Wailea. This one brings you into Wailea on the "high road" (SR-31, Pi'ilani Highway)
THREE HOUR TOUR
This is Maalaea Harbor. ============================================== MY FRONT YARD
Nothing special. I just thought the tree with it's yellow flowers looked pretty in this morning sun. And, no, I do not know what kind of tree it is. My knowledge of trees is limited to knowing that some have leaves that fall off and others have needles that fall off. ============================================== MY APOLOGIES
The loss of the "TITLE" feature was not BLOGSPOT's fault. And I have learned not to drink and blog. I sure hope MADB (Mothers Against Drunk Bloggers) doesn't get all over my case.
REMEMBER: DON'T DRINK AND BLOG! THE BLOG YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN! ============================================== FINALLY
I discovered that the problem with the "Alt-Key" symbols is located within BLOGSPOT's programming on their server. Hopefully they'll do an upgrade about that somewhere down the road.
Also, the way that MSIE displays certain blogs (mine, among others) is not the result of a HTML coding error. Its just their old, wornout brower program. As I mentioned earlier, just download (see prior post) the Mozilla FIREFOX browser and enjoy the real internet. IMHO ============================================== Later.....
HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUAA This is the name of the official state fish of Hawai'i.
Its pronounced: HOO-moo-HOO-moo-NOO-koo-NOO-koo-AH-poo-AH-ah (meaning "triggerfish with a snout like a pig". Locally called "Pig Nosed Fish"). Genus: Rhinecanthus Species: R. rectangulus Binomial name: Rhinecanthus rectangulus
Thats a mouthful!
It was made the state fish in 1985 but lost the title when the "sunset" clause of the law took affect after 5 years. Now 16 years later, the state legislature is attempting to address this oversight.
ARTICLE ============================================== BLOGSPOT STILL NOT FIXED
Here's an excellent site where you can learn about some "alt" key features or to just CC&P the symbols.
WIL"S NOTE: OBVIOUSLY THIS HAS A PROBLEM, AT LEAST IN MY BROWSER. I GET AN "A" WITH A ROOF OVER IT BEFORE EACH OF THE SYMBOLS. DIDN"T SHOW THAT WAY WHEN I PREVIEWED BEFORE POSTING. hmmmm. ============================================== SPEAKING OF BROWSERS
If you haven't done so already, Download the MOZILLA FIREFOX browser when you get the chance. It is a sharp improvement over MSIE-6 and MSIE-7.
Just click the link to go to the download site. Its FREE and you'll still have your MSIE available. ============================================== ANOTHER WORK DAY
It's about 9:40am here. Time for bed. Another week starts at 7:00pm tonight.
A nice quiet day off here in paradise. Every time I felt an urge to do something productive, I would just lie down until it passed. :) ============================================== I've added the CIA World Factbook to my "RESOURCE CENTER" in the right sidebar.
I have also linked each of the flags, under the banner at the top of this blog, to the corresponding CIA World Factbook page for that country. Hope you find this interesting and/or helpful. ============================================== Blogspot is having problems again. The TITLE section is missing when you create a post.
I'll have to edit this post and add a title when that feature reappears in the "create" function.
Wishing all of you the best week of your life to date. ==============================================
Boogie boards are sold everywhere, even in supermarkets.
These are kinda pretty. Looks like some of Wyland's artwork. ============================================== SPF-70
There are only a few places in the world where this much protection is needed. I think you are protected upto a "X" level solar flare. Very popular item with our "snowbird" visitors. ============================================== LASER ACUPUNCTURE
This is Kristy Plonsky. She owns an acupuncture business that uses lasers rather than needles. She specializes in helping people quit smoking. Whether it works or not is debateable. But at $299.00 per session, she's obviously laughing all the way to the bank.
I dropped her in Makena, in a "gated" community about 500 meters from Clint Eastwood's home. She was going to go hot tubbing with a friend. ============================================== LAST NIGHT
First really good shift in a long time. Came on at 7:00pm and didn't get a run until 8:30pm and that was to OGG. Followed that up with a run from the Mau'i Prince Hotel (way south) to Sugar Beach at the very north end of Kihei. And then I made a trip from The Grand to the Hyatt, in Kaanapali (north of Lahaina, on the westside of the island).
Three really big $$$ runs in a row. The airport run tipped me $17 and the westside trip brought a $42 gratuity. Not bad at all! :)
Other than perfunctory radio traffic, I had no conversations with the drivers who were a pain the prior shift.
As usual for a saturday night/sunday morning, there were no requests for a cab during my solo part of the shift. ============================================== SACRIFICE THE CHOCOLATE BUNNY
Strange, I don't remember seeing any TV ads for CADBURY this year.
I live at the end of the world's day, just one time zone east of the International Date Line, so I hope everyone had a great Easter. Sunrise services are just starting here and my days off have begun. ==============================================
I logged on at 7:00pm and didn't get my first dispatch until 8:00pm. Sat at the Four Seasons until 8:26pm, when I made pickup to OGG. It was a pleasant run with a lady and her daughter, who were returning to Santa Monica, CA, USA.
I had taken over dispatch at 7:15pm and we were having a rather active evening. After the recent "dry" shifts we have suffered through, the other drivers transformed into a tiger shark feeding frenzy. They started questioning the allocation of the runs. Being real asses. I finally became feed up with the complaints and tossed the phone to the last complainer and told him to have a nice graveyard shift. I went home at 1:30am. I just didn't care anymore.
We are not compensated for dispatching, its just a duty that we all share. And sometimes the grief I suffer through, trying to make sure everyone makes money, just isn't worth it.
It's now 10:30am and I've finally calmed down.
Only took 15 revisions of this post to eliminate the profanity,
============================================== FLAGS UNDER BANNER
Someone e-mailed me about those little flags under the banner.
They flags represent where each visitor to Paradise Driver is from.
Wouldn't it be unique to have all 160+ nations of the world represented here?
File that thought away in the WILD DREAMS folder. ==============================================

Another slow night. So slow that I took an extended break from 10:30pm to 12:30am. I would rather be doing nothing in the comfort of my home than in the front seat of my cab.
My last run of the night (3 hours before the end of the shift) was the same two ladies, Natalie & Monica, from last night They are enjoying their "spring break". ============================================= TRANSLATOR CODE
This is the code for the Babel Fish translator.
Just CC&P it into the proper place in your blog's template.
You will need to make two adjustments: 1. Change the RGB color code "triplet" to a color that will work on your blog's background. You can get all the color code HERE.
2. insert your blog's URL where it says YOUR URL HERE.
That's all there is to it! Enjoy!
