It must really be a bitch.

Friday night got off to a slow start and gradually deteriorated.

None of us were moving. By 11:00pm I had a total of 5 runs.

About 11:10pm the airline concierge service at OGG called. Two different flights (America West and Air Canada) had failed to depart. 200 people needed to be taken to hotels, in KAANAPALI!!! Thats an $85+ trip. Dispatched all of us (6 cabs) to the airport. and we spent until 3:00am moving people.

Unfortunately, the concierge was only able to find accommodations for the America West passengers and those from Air Canada had to sleep in the airport.

All these trips are paid by airline vouchers and include a 15% automatic gratuity.

Plus, we all arranged return trips, for tonight, back to the airport.

To put it mildly, DAMN! It was a good night.

WHEN YOU'RE HOT, "YOU'RE HOT"

WHEN YOU'RE NOT, "YOU'RE NOT"

The first three hours were steady with "dinner runs" from the hotels and, awhile later, back to the hotels.

Then came the "10 o'clock 'magic' hour" and the switch was turned off. The night began to bore. Maybe a run an hour until "bar close" and that actually started around 1:00am when some of the places began closing for lack of business.

Just two runs during the solo hours.

The nice thing is that, do to some recent changes, my relief checked in at 4:15am. He met me at Minit-Stop, where I was refueling, and took over the phone, We BS'd for about 1/2 hour and then I headed for the barn.

When I did my paper work, I found out that I had a rather decent shift. That's kewl. :)

There wasn't one incident or run that left a lasting impression.
GOOD NEWS: It was a mellow night
BAD NEWS: Not a damn thing to write about

FIREWORKS!!!

A DIFFERENT TYPE OF GROUP

1,000, or so, associates of COUNTRYWIDE have taken over the GRAND WAILEA and the FOUR SEASONS for their annual awards gala. These are the rare groups that the island loves. Their daily itinerary is very open. They leave "campus" and explore the island, savoring everything that is available. These are some of the raging young bucks of business.

Boy, are we glad they showed up!

Last night was their first offical night on the island and their company welcomed them with a fireworks show.

Of course, I knew nothing about this and was sitting at the Tsunami entrance when a big bang occurred. Trust me. Big bangs are something that cops really hate hearing. My head snapped around and I saw the fading embers. Seizing the opportunity, I grabbed my camera and started taking some pics. This was the best of the bunch.


Then my little epithany light started flashing over my head.

"uh, dummy. This camera takes video!"

I immediately switched over to video mode and shot the following.

Picked up a solo man from the GRAND at about 9:40pm. He wanted to have some fun and, naturally, all the local staff told him that their favorite spot was HAPA'S.

During the journey, he asked questions.

"What is the bar like?"

"What type of crowd will I find?"


"How do they treat tourists?"

"Will I be safe there?"

That is the first time THAT ever happened!

I gave him my honest opinion and we diverted to the "Triangle".

"PISSED OFF" LADY


This lady of indeterminate age, was waiting for me below DENNY'S at about 12:30am. She wanted to go to Wailuku, which abuts Kahului on the west. From the moment she entered the cab until I dropped her off, 30 minutes later, she yelled.

Constantly.

The only words I understood were "fucker" and "bullshit". The rest of the words were Korean and I am willing to bet that she "stayed in character" in that language also. During her brief moments of rationality I think I pieced together her story.

She works for one of the Korean bars on lower Main street in Wailuku (I'll explain more about them this weekend). She apparently left the bar with a new "friend" and went to his apartment in Kihei. His credit card didn't "clear". She only had $50 on her (the fare came out to $49.70) and it was too late to go back to work and develop another "relationship".

As I said.

She was PISSED!

I use a Sony CyberShot DSC-540 for both the pics and videos.


It is a cheap ($150) entry level camera. 4.1 megapixel.

It comes with 36 mb internal memory. I've added a 512 mb memory stick ($50 at Walmart). I plan on adding another memory stick when I can, locally, find the adaptor.


It fits comfortably in my pocket, both shirt and pants, and that all I use. No laptop, no power inverter, no cables and no loss of the front passenger seat.

Not bad, eh?

MY CAB

It is a 1997 Mercury Gran Marquis with 145,620 miles on it, as of this morning. The company purchased it in February, 2005. It only had 36,000 miles on it.

Ford sedans have a problem here in Hawai'i with the edge of the roof liner pealing away from the window molding, over which the edge is glued.

I've tried reglueing, to no positive result.

As London Cabby mentioned, in an earlier comment, this wouldn't pass the strict regulations that he works under.

"One-Nine" is the only cab I drive.

Tips weren't as good as Tuesday's, but I am not complaining.

WOULDN'T IT BE LOVERLY....

A FANTASTIC NIGHT

The ebb and flow of business was great last night. From 7:00pm to 2:00am we all kept moving. Very little downtime. And none of the drunks were obnoxious, thats rare.

Tips were OUTSTANDING!!! My two smallest runs were $5.30 each and both gave me $15.00!! The long runs tipped over 25%. The biggest tip was $25, on a run of $15.

Some nights it just pays to be "lucky" rather than "good."

I wish all nights could be like this one was.

FAVORITE TRIP OF THE NIGHT

I had just cleared a run at "White Rock", a beach about 1/2 mile south of the KEA LANI and was dispatched to make a pickup at MULLIGANS, just around the corner. Destination: unknown?

As is par with pick-ups there, the people did not immediately appear. I was just about to call a "10-13" (no show/no load) when three lovely young ladies started down the steps. Just a wee bit tipsy.


These lasses were on holiday from Vancouver, BC, Canada, and were looking for some fun and MULLIGANS was not THAT place tonight.

They are here for the rest of the week and hopefully I'll have contact with them again. They are really fun.

GAS PRICE

I heard on the radio last night that gas prices on the mainland could easily top $3.00 per gallon and might even reach $4.00. If that happens then we will be paying over $5.00 and probably close to $6.00.

This may put a bit of a damper on my vacation plans to take my grandsons to Yellowstone, Carlsbad Caverns and the Grand Canyon this summer.

LATE NIGHT RADIO

Since I am not a big fan of the business of sports, I do NOT listen to sports talk radio. Since most radio stations today are just programmed computers, with mp3 music and mp3 announcers, and play the same 40 song playlist continously for a month, I get bored. When I do listen to the radio at night, it is usually Coast-To-Coast AM with George Noorey weeknights and Art Bell on the weekends. I don't believe any of what is said there but it can be an enjoyable way to pass the night. I know it is a favorite of a lot of truckers on the mainland.

LASER ACUPUNCTURE

This is Kristy Plonsky. She owns an acupuncture business that uses lasers rather than needles. She specializes in helping people quit smoking. Whether it works or not is debateable. But at $299.00 per session, she's obviously laughing all the way to the bank.

I dropped her in Makena, in a "gated" community about 500 meters from Clint Eastwood's home. She was going to go hot tubbing with a friend.

LAST NIGHT

First really good shift in a long time. Came on at 7:00pm and didn't get a run until 8:30pm and that was to OGG. Followed that up with a run from the Mau'i Prince Hotel (way south) to Sugar Beach at the very north end of Kihei. And then I made a trip from The Grand to the Hyatt, in Kaanapali (north of Lahaina, on the westside of the island).

Three really big $$$ runs in a row. The airport run tipped me $17 and the westside trip brought a $42 gratuity. Not bad at all! :)

Other than perfunctory radio traffic, I had no conversations with the drivers who were a pain the prior shift.

As usual for a saturday night/sunday morning, there were no requests for a cab during my solo part of the shift.

SOME NIGHTS JUST GO DOWNHILL

ROUGH NIGHT

I logged on at 7:00pm and didn't get my first dispatch until 8:00pm. Sat at the Four Seasons until 8:26pm, when I made pickup to OGG. It was a pleasant run with a lady and her daughter, who were returning to Santa Monica, CA, USA.

I had taken over dispatch at 7:15pm and we were having a rather active evening. After the recent "dry" shifts we have suffered through, the other drivers transformed into a tiger shark feeding frenzy. They started questioning the allocation of the runs. Being real asses. I finally became feed up with the complaints and tossed the phone to the last complainer and told him to have a nice graveyard shift. I went home at 1:30am. I just didn't care anymore.

We are not compensated for dispatching, its just a duty that we all share. And sometimes the grief I suffer through, trying to make sure everyone makes money, just isn't worth it.

It's now 10:30am and I've finally calmed down.

THERE'S A BAD MOON ON THE RISE

All the signs pointed to a good shift.

The Shops at Wailea had more people than I had ever seen.

The weather was dry and the temperature was 75f/24c. A very light breeze.

A full moon was rising.

It was so slow that the usual "die hard" day drivers didn't even stay late, trying to earn that extra dollar.

By 2:00am, I had only had 6 runs. Normally I have 15-20.

The most fun run of the night was at "bar close". Two young ladies from Danville, CA, USA. A town, now city, that I patrolled a long time ago.

Their names are Natalie and Monica

We had 4 cabs scheduled to be on-duty by 6:00am, but we had 4 scheduled runs between 6:15am and 6:45am. That would mean no coverage for all those unscheduled walkouts that want to go golfing, etc.

Picked up the 6:15am run from the Mau'i Coast to OGG. It was my biggest $$$ run of the night.

The sunrise caught me as I was leaving Kahului.

I'VE HAD WORSE NIGHTS, BUT NOT MANY

WALKING INTO HEAVEN

When you enter the Grand Wailea you are greeted by some beautiful sculpture.

Just past the foyer there are two displays of native Hawai'ian dancers.


Three lifesize kanes (men) are on your left.





Three lifesize wahines (women) are on your right.




Just a few steps further and you are greated by the grandeur.

A mermaid awaits your beckon, while the Botero Bar behind her is ready to serve you whatever exotic drink imaginable.

Then you glance skyward to embrace the splendor.

LAST NIGHT

At "bar close" (2:00am), I had a total of 3 runs. Thats pretty sad. The other drivers hadn't done any better and went home to "lick their wounds".

I managed to eek out three more runs during my solo hours of the night.

The most interesting, and most $$$ (this run doubled what I had on the meter for the night) was the result of a head-on traffic collision.

My passengers were the four people riding in this pickup truck.


The drunk driver of this vehicle crossed the center line of the road.

Thankfully, no one involved was seriously injured.
I took the victims home to Lahaina, about 25 miles away. The police made other arrangements for the drunk.

And wouldn't you know it. The phone rang three times within 5 minutes after I had started this run. Other people wanting a cab. Since I am the only cab in south Mau'i after 2:00am, they were S.O.L.

Ended the shift with 6 trips. The "take home" was actually decent.

GOING TO DINNER

My friends, Dave and Judy, have invited me over to their house for dinner tonight. As I have mentioned before, having a "home cooked meal" is a real treat for this bachelor. Oh, I am a very good cook, also, but I just hate to cook for myself. Usually 2+ hours of preparation and then 15-30 minutes to consume the meal. Also, I have trouble just cooking for one person (me). I tend to make enough to feed 4 to 6 people and then have to eat the same thing for the next week. Boring.

Judy is my unqualified best friend. We have known each other for over 26 years. We have never been a "couple", have never been "involved". We have suffered and shined through our marriages, our divorces, helped raise each others kids and always have been there for the other when facing "trying" times or sharing joyous events. I love her very deeply.

After Judy and Dave married, in 2001, it took him a while to understand that I was not a threat to their relationship and we have become friends.

BTW - he's the one cooking tonight and he is a great chef. He actually was a chef in one of the better restaurants, now out-of-business, on Mau'i for a long time.

Bob, over at TAXI TALES, posted about the difficulty in locating addresses. There were a lot of comments from readers relating their difficulty in the various locales in which they live.

Obviously, this is a worldwide problem.

It's no different here on Mau'i.

First, we have street names that most people really "butcher" when trying to pronounce them.

When you finally determine where they are at , you hope that the address is easily readable from the street

GOOD NIGHT

Do to unforeseen circumstances, I didn't have to start dispatching until 9:30pm. Great way to start the shift! 2-1/2 hours of peaceful driving with no phone!

Everybody stayed busy and made money.

The most notable ride of the night was a 3-pax from Tsunami's to WorldMark about 12:30am.

The two ladies were very nice. Their male companion was a loud, obnoxious, overly intoxicated boar (bore?). He had been escorted from Tsunami's by hotel security.

As he entered my cab he was yelling "Take us to 'Trend West'", repeatedly. I was busy on the phone and was involved in radio traffic with two of my drivers, trying to organize their runs. I had to tell him to "sit down and shut-up."

During the ride, we diverted to FoodLand for one of the ladies' needs. Repeatedly, I had to admonish the male that it was not necessary to yell, since he was seated next to me, on the front passenger seat. He took umbrage to my statements, but the ladies in the backseat told him to "shut up" and that he was the one being rude, not the cabbie (me).

The ladies apologized profusely for the man's belligerence and tipped me very generously at the end of the trip.

After 2:00am, the town died and I spent the next few hours photographing mailboxes.
