This year's general election is going to shift many people's loyalties.

This is the first general election where the internet is an important factor. Rumor mongers, distorters and flat out liars are getting caught in their own deceitful webs. As are candidates who claim to be misquoted.

While supply & demand are pretty much balanced in the oil market, speculators have been the major cause of of the skyrocketing prices. To try and thwart these get-rich-quick carpetbaggers, Saudi Arabia has decided to increase its production to a level that hasn't been reached in decades. We'll see how well it goes. I just talked to Judy and gas is more expensive in California than in Mau'i. Ouch!



The FCC may federalize the way fees charged by cell phone companies for early termination of a contract. Right now it is a patchwork of 50 different State's PUC rules. The companies are not happy.

The Summer June Solstice will occur on the 20th, Friday. Summer will finally begin north of the equator and Winter on the flip side.

Talked to Judy last night and the economic picture on Mau'i is worsening. She is still out of work and isn't even getting responses from her resumes. She's never had this problem before. She is a full charge bookkeeper with almost 35 years of experience and usually is in demand. But not now.

SCRATCHING THE BACK ALLEYS

Back in 1976 a sci-fi film called Futureworld was released. Sort of an adult version of Disneyland, with lots of sex. Looks like, once again, that our future could just hold this to be true in about another 40 years or so.

As you are aware, good ol' Dubya has been visiting Europe. But since he is basically an unwelcomed guest, he has time to actually get to see the countryside.

In a case of the pot calling the kettle black, Candy Rice is criticizing Israel for settlements in disputed land in the Gaza strip. Not that I agree with Israel's actions but by what criteria does Candy have the right to offer an opinion about occupying land.

That interesting gadget, the Segway, has been an unexpected beneficiary of the gas crunch.

If you thought that monkey's weren't smart, then explain how this one escaped using a garden hose.

Yesterday evening I had dinner at Appleby's with the "daughter" and grandsons #3 & #4. Then we went to see the Indiana Jones movie. Later I watched the mid-season finale of Battlestar Gallactica. It was a wonderful day.

I have watched Appleby's commercials for years but, since there were no outlets on Mau'i, I could only fantasize about the quality of their product. Lets just say that it didn't live up to my dream. Not that there was anything wrong with either the food or service but it was just ordinary. Plain ordinary. I'll probably go back again but with greatly lowered expectations.

I would rate the Indie movie an "A-". It started a bit slow and was predictable through most of the plot. But there was plenty of action/adventure. When you are at a movie with a 4-year old, its easy to determine when the story had lost excitement. So, using the 4 y.o. meter gauge, I would say that it dragged for a maximum total of 15 minutes. Not too bad. There were some surprises. When Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) appeared it was a shock and, as one of you hinted earlier, if George Lucas wants to continue the Indie series into the future he has it all set up with the Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) character. And it would be a natural extension. Trust me. There was symbolism about "passing the hat" in the closing scene.

The comedic spots were good and the quips were appropriate. The ending was a might strange but acceptable.

This was the first movie I have seen in a theater since Star Wars - Episode 1. In the beautiful multi-screen theater we attended, I was impressed by how clean it was. No matter where I looked. The people were well behaved. No kids running rampant, no conversations across the theater, no cell phones ringing. Civilized behavior that I was unaccustomed to.

My son has Dish-Tv and has been Tivoing Battlestar Gallactica for me. He has no interest in sci-fi. Last night I was able to watch last Friday's episode. The coalition of remaining Humans and Cylons finally reach Earth. An Earth that has been devastated and is devoid of any lifeforms. And the event is not a recent occurrence. That is where it ended. Paradise Lost. There are 10 more episodes to go before the series ends and they don't start airing until January of '09. I hope the SAG doesn't go on strike and screw-up production schedules and the winter TV season.

JUST WHAT IS A GAMMA RAY?

I mentioned gamma radiation recently in reference to a new telescope and those who have seen the new cinematic release know that gamma rays turned Bruce Banner into the Incredible Hulk. So, if it is of any interest to you, here is a brief explaination about gammas. Written in a way that you don't need a doctorate in physics to understand.

When Jurassic Park was initially released, science poo-pooed the idea of resurrecting beasts from the past as being impossible. Well, they should have added the caveat "at this time". As is always the case, what was tomorrrow's pipe dreams is yesterday's "been there, done that." Using DNA from ancient fossils, attempts are being conducted, using chicken eggs, to rebirth creatures from the
past.

If you thought that stealing of body parts was something that only occurred in 3rd-world nations or in old gothic horror stories, then what been going on here in the USA might come as a shock.

We've all heard the term, "Different strokes for different folks" but this guy in Singapore is going to spend 14 years behind bars and get 18 strokes of the cane for his peccadilloes.

But the surprising thing is that McCain has also disagreed with yesterday's Supreme Court decision on the Constitutional Rights of the detainees at Guantanamo and other locations controlled by the USA. Thats scary. Our country was founded with a set of laws that applied to everyone. True, its taken 200+ years to reach the point where it is more fact than fiction but Dubya, and I guess McShame, don't believe in the spirit, the dream, the promise of that document. The last 2 times the Court slapped Dubya's hand for this misbehavior, he had his cronies in the Republican controlled Congress write new laws. This time around he can't, since the GOP has lost its control over both those Houses and the Dems are ready for a bloodlust feeding frenzy after November. Expect to see a lot of Dubya's policies overturned after Inauguration Day.

As far as the candidate's tax policies go, McShame would make sure that business and high income families are protected while Obama will seek to provide relief for middle and lower income families. Both plans would cause deficit increases unless the breaks Dubya gave away to his cronies are reversed.


I love the "Fair & Balanced" coverage that FoxNews is providing. Michelle Obama is worth more than their entire "on-air" staff, put together. So they make a slightly veiled reference to her race by using ghetto street terminology.
