DAILY CHUCKLE

"Let's all be careful out there!"

GRANDSON #3 ASKED ME THIS TODAY:

DEFINE "COSMIC DARK BODY MICROWAVE RADIATION"

And you all thought "Why is the sky blue?" was hard. I floored him with a 5 minute dissertation on the subject.

That windfall profit tax that Obama mused about has already died. At least for now. Also stymied by Senate Republicans was an effort to remove the tax cuts granted to the petroleum industry by Dubya and his sect of big biz cultists.

I spent the day with my "daughter" and grandsons #3 & #4. Every restaurant we went by had signs in the window advising that tomatoes were no longer part of their condiments. Not on burgers, salsa, salads, etc. Mexican food with no salsa?!! They can run the tomatoes through a hot water bath to eliminate the contamination. The big winners should be the canned vegetable companies. All tomato juice, sauce, paste, soup are precooked above 140 degrees, thus killing the bacteria.

Protests over the price of fuel around the world have become deadly. And some OPEC members are calling for a summit between them and the major oil consumption nations. I agree with their iteration that much of the price run-up is due to speculators playing the market rather than traditional market factors. And a lawyer in Florida is suing OPEC for "price fixing".

And while the motivation is different, violence is also happening here in the States.

How much is gas in your area compared to the rest of the nation? Here is a map for the 48 contiguous States and Hawaii. By clicking on the map, you can narrow the image right down to your local streets and stations. Here is one for Canada.

A bad situation, but a fortunate outcome. And how many years of medical school did it take for the surgeon to learn to use a claw hammer?

Again I restate my belief that DUIs should NOT be released from custody until they are sober. Don't the police departments have any concept of the liability they have opened themselves up to by kicking someone loose when bail is paid?

Some signs for sale at a store yesterday:

Thanks for stopping over. I hope I have entertained and/or educated you. Check back later for more. Later, my friends.

BEWARE OF IDENTITY THEFT

A CHEF WITH NO...

SENSE OF TASTE

This is one of those "feel good" stories. A master chef who contracted very rare cancer of the tongue yet still produces dishes to die for.

Nothing will come of it but Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) has called for the impeachment of GWB. Dennis tends to be as far "left" as Bush is "right". The wrong move at the wrong time. The Democratic leadership doesn't want it, nor do the majority of Americans. The grounds for impeachment are very restrictive. The better move is to wait until he is out of office and then go for criminal charges. Easier to prove. Then you can strip him of his benefits and let him waste his days away in prison. Along with Rice and Cheney and Rumsfeld and etc.

The FHA (Federal Housing Administration) anticipates a loss of $4.6 billion due to unexpectedly high mortgage defaults.

I am going to have to check with the PGA about how to handle this course hazard.

Now that I've read it, it makes sense. But its something that I hadn't really contemplated before as a necessity at the South Pole.

Did you hear about the latest craze in audio? Vinyl recordings. Why didn't somebody think of this before?

As always, thank you for your patronage. I appreciate the time you spend here. I'll have more for you later. Check back when you get the chance.

TO CONTINUE ON A THEME

The most hits this blog has ever had in a week is 1,009. As of 5 minutes ago, I had 1,244 hits today alone. Since 7:00 AM local I've been averaging a days worth of hits every hour. All I can say is WOW!
Of course, trying to find trends has gone out the window, at least graphically, since today's stats are so high that all proceeding days are just a smudge against the bottom of the scale.

Whoever first found the "Infant Care" post, and published it, has been copied by at least 4 other high traffic sites. Its interesting to see new town names on the trackers.

Just a quick thought about an Obama/Clinton ticket. Obama has a chance of drawing many votes from those the neo-cons call RINOs (Republican In Name Only). He has a very broad appeal. But if he joins with Clinton then he won't get those votes. Clinton is the devil incarnate to most Republicans and she would, at most, only draw that small percentage of the electorate that she desperately appealed to in the waning days of the primaries.

In my opinion, she would be a greater liability to the ticket than an asset.

IBM's supercomputer, ROADRUNNER, has broken the petaflop barrier. Thats 1,000 trillion calculations per second, twice as fast as the prior record, also held by IBM. What is most amazing is that the components used were the same as found in PlayStation 3.

TOTALLY SHOCKED!!

On a really good week this blog gets about 1,000 page loads. The busiest day is typically Monday, when everyone who reads from work logs in. So imagine my surprise when at about 10:30 AM local I decided to try and find something to post for my Noon entry. Checked the stats and (HOLY SHIT!) I already had a half weeks worth of hits. My first reaction a was that the first counter had a major software problem. Checked all the others and they confirmed the story.

So, what brought all the sudden interest? Someone linked to my 31-May-08 post about Instructions For Infant Care, and all hell broke loose. Then another site did they same. I am not complaining, its one of those "whoa" moments in life and it won't last but I'll savor it for its brief moment.

Obama has announced that he will seek a windfall profits tax on oil companies if elected. So you know where big oil is going to be spending money over the next 5 months. Maybe not in direct contributions to McCain but in a concerted subliminal PR push that will explain where their accountants say the money goes, while softly denouncing those who would denegrate their meager profits. Raising a doubt in people's minds about the qualifications of someone who would pose such a solution.

Around the world, most people generally like America and Americans. The same can't be said for our leader de jour. Dubya's trip to Slovenia this week for a summit of European leaders, will show this fact as he is treated like yesterday's fish. Stinking up the place and everybody ready for him to be thrown out with the trash. Can't say I blame them, after the way he has treated our European friends the past 7+ years.

I AM SORRY...

SUNDAYS ODDS & ENDS

In the new Cyprus vehicle code, it is now illegal to abandon your vehicle while it is in motion.

I mentioned before about the newer Mac's ability to be operated remotely and how victims of thefts have captured images from the built in camera of its new location and people around it. Now a new memory card for digital cameras automatically search for compatible wifi sources and download images back to your home PC.
