ALL YA HAS TO DO IS ASK, BRAH

THE WORSE THEY CAN DO IS SAY "NO"

And the pretty ones seldom do!

~Crystal~

Crystal's brother, Cy, is a mixologist/floorhost (bartender/bouncer) at one of the clubs in the "Triangle".

She is very pretty and very sweet. I picked her up at Cy's condo and during the trip we talked about highheeled shoes. She agreed with my observation that "Highheels are meant to be seen, not walked in."

Her dress had a side slit (not shown) which went all the way up to WOW!

Bada Bing's has a new sign over their front entrance. Very well done - IMHO

LAST NIGHT

Phone was transferred to me at 7:15pm (1915 hrs). The owner, Art, advised me that it had been a really slow day and gave me two reservations for the night, thats not much for a Friday, and the status of the 7 cabs (not including me) on duty.

Then the phone started to ring.

I think every driver ended up with at least one OGG run and a handful of dinner runs. By 9:00pm, the three dayshift cabs had gone home. We stayed busy, but not rushed, until 11:00pm and then just sat around waiting for "bar close", which was a tremendous fizzle.

Just before 2:00am, I picked up a 4-pax headed for Denny's. They were the same people that had been in the cab when we observed that pickup truck crash at the intersection of south Kihei road and Alanui Ke Ali'i, taking out the traffic light pole, back on the 11th of April. The woman (note: I did not say "Lady") who was in the front seat that night was there again tonight. All she could do was bitch about me and my camera and how she wished they had found another cab to ride in. I gave her the option of getting out but the others talked her out of it. She never shut up during the short 5 minute trip. The two of us mixed about as well as oil and water. I told the gentleman who paid me that I would not be back to get them if she was going to be a passenger. I was serious. He laughed. About 2:45am he called and wanted me to take them home. I told him "NO".

"Are you serious?"

"Yes, sir. I have the legal right to refuse service to anyone and I do not see any sense in subjecting myself to her verbal abuse."

"I can understand that." He chuckled.

I guess they walked the one mile home. I don't really care.

There was only one call during the graveyard hours. A "regular" who had spent the morning visiting with a young female tourist, in her condo, until 4:30am. He was exhausted.

The two early drivers were in by 4:45am and I was gone by 5:00am.

MOONSET

Snagged this shot on the way home:

Then I decided that there was enough light to make a short, 2 minute, video.

The sound is ambient.

Enjoy!

ZIPPITY DO DAH

WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY!

NOT!

I usually awake around 3:00pm, leap jump hop crawl stumble out of bed, get a HUGE glass of iced tea and head for the PC to find out what has happened in our world.

Today, I was jerked into reality by the BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP of my alarm clock at 5:00pm.

Crawling out of bed was a barely viable option, falling would probably be more accurate.

The body was clearly sending the signal that this day wasn't going to involve me.

Felt like I had had my ass stomped by a rampaging bull.

Called off, fed BEAR and went back to bed.

2:30am now. Wide awake. Feeling somewhat better.

I'll probably be ok for Friday night. Besides, that is one of my two nights to dispatch, and we all know how much that means to me.

ON THE BEACH

OUR LONGEST BEACH

At the very north end of Kihei is the Sugar Beach Resort.

It has this huge gear mounted at the entrance. Everyone refers to it as "The Big Wheel".

The beach is a soft powdery sand, about the texture of granulated sugar, hence the name. It is about 7 miles (11 km) long.

Looking north

Looking south

A beautiful view, all the way to Makena.

This is the normal wave action.

Many boats anchor off-shore.

A local canoe club is based about 1/2 mile (o.8 km) south.

Only two things keep it from being perfect.
From here to Maalaea is the windiest part of the island. The funneling effect between Mt. Haleakala and the West Mau'i Mountains, across the central isthmus, can raise 20 mph (32 kph) trade winds to over 50 mph (80 kph).

In the "looking north" photo, you'll see a stand of trees in the distance. Therein lies the second problem. A large number of homeless are camped there.

LAST NIGHT

It was almost an exact copy of Tuesday night. The big change was that I had an OGG run early in the evening and another one at the end of my shift. Activity died about 9:45pm and I kicked back at home from 11:30pm to 1:15am.

There was a huge wedding reception at the Four Seasons yesterday afternoon/evening. The guest list had people from Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. I made one pickup of a 4-pax from there and met three very charming police officers from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. They (half seriously) were bitching about the "tipping" custom in the States. How'd they treat me? $20 on a $12.20 fare.

This was the bride & groom's rental car.

I am not sure what it is called, Concorde I think, but it has the look of the old Cords from the '20's and '30's.

Anybody out there know?

FOR SHADOW

Sooooooo.....you bought the bullet hole car for....fond memories?! Looking at that hole everyday would give me the creeps.

While I hope that is the last time anyone ever takes a shot at me, it wasn't the first time. Not by the total of your fingers and toes, doubled, and more.

From steamy jungles of southeast asia to the jungle of a modern American ghetto. I've had more than my fair share of "close calls".

I've been shot (thank god for Kevlar) and I have shot back, very, very accurately.

This is my original "One-Nine" and it is in great shape. The mileage is high but the price was cheap and the "Mau'i cruiser" I had before was on its last legs.

Its funny. I drive between 75,000 to 90,000 miles a year in my cab but I only put about 2,000 miles a year on my POV. This baby is gonna be around a loooong time.

ALTERNATE ACCESS

BACKDOOR

OK these are a lot of restaurants - but I was especially fascinated by the "Birkenstock" shop next to the Italian restaurant.

Oh and congratulations to the Chinese visitor. I tried to visit your blog via the "normal" Chinese internet but sadly all blogs on blogspot.com are blocked in China.

I think he may have accessed via my ROADRUNNER homepage, which "mirrors" blogspot. Since the URL is just a homepage it might not be restricted. Next time you are in China, check it out and let me know.

MAY DOLDRUMS

THE WAITING PERIOD

May, thru the middle of June, is a very slow time here.

On the mainland, students are preparing for high school & college finals. Graduating seniors are eagerly planning their proms, class trips and anticipating their moment to walk to the dais and receive their parchment, amid strains of "Pomp and Circumstance". We've all been there. It is a rite of passage that is important in our society.

All that frentic activity means that the tourist count on Mau'i is typically very low. Most of the activity businesses on the island are offering deeply discounted rates, and the airfares are way low.

This all changes around the middle of June, when our summer tourist season begins.

The tourism business is one of ebb and flow.

LAST NIGHT

The first 2-1/2 hours were very active. No airport runs but a lot of people going to and from dinner. Most runs were in the $15 range and it was a constant repetition of "Here's $20, keep the change."

After 9:30pm it died. 2 hours and one run later, I decided to go home for awhile. I'd rather be bored there than sitting around watching drunks at the "Triangle".

Came back out at 1:15am and nailed three good runs at bar close.

Thought the graveyard shift was going to be dead but the phone started ringing at 3:00am and I added six more runs before 5:00am.

One was the typical drunk, who is maintaining but is on that edge where he is trying to create a situation for an argument. His complaints were: where he could "find some pussy", buy some beer and why didn't I carry a couple of cases of booze and/or beer in the trunk to sell to thirsty passengers after bar close? I got him back to the Kea Lani and out of my hair in an eyeblink. Nothing unusual about him but his was the most notable ride of the shift.

BULLET HOLE

I've told the story about the guy who took the shot at me inside the cab. Well, I bought that car for my personnal use and here is a pic of where the bullet exitted the car. I'd call that a "near miss".

BEAUTIFUL CAR

I love the paint job on this Cadillac Escalante. It is called "White Diamond" and that is exactly what it looks like. The color is a factory option and the car looks like it is covered in diamond dust. Very beautiful!
