ODDS AND ENDS

Heres a guy who plans on putting his money into the starving mouths of African children. Hats off to him.

Not stupid enough to qualify for a LLDE rating but it does prove the point that if you are going to commit a crime, don't leave any evidence behind.

More indirect proof that Jupiter's moon, Europa, has a liquid water separation between its solid core and icy crust. Prior to this new info, it had been just a speculation.

Like a movie trailer to spark interest in an upcoming film, just over a week before the Phoenix Mission touches down near the Martian north polar icecap, NASA has released details about data acquired from radar probing by their Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Turns out that the polar icecap is about 1.2 miles thick and was formed in layers. It also sits on bedrock at least 130 miles thick.

If you believe in creationism, go ahead and skip this story. Scientists have now proven that it is possible for certain micro-organisms to survive in space and also the forces that would cause them to be ejected into the cosmos in the first place. And the re-entry.

The article doesn't go this far but we do know that our Sun is a 3rd generation star, created when the shockwave of a 2nd generation star went supernova. Could microbial life from a destroyed planet around that second g. star have populated Earth? Something to ponder.

I was taught that humans were the only intelligent creatures on the face of the planet. But studies have shown that is no longer a valid presumption. And just exactly what is "intelligence"? The ability to learn? Empathy for others? Problem solving? Use of tools? Self-awareness?

Read through this article and share your opinion. After I read it, I came to the conclusion that some folks might not measure up to their pets.

And finally, on this day:
  • 1792 - the New York Stock Exchange was created by 24 brokers at 70 Wall Street.
  • 1875 - The first Kentucky Derby was run at Louisville, KY.
  • 1954 - In Brown v Board of Education of Topeka the US Supreme Court made segregated schools illegal.
  • 1973 - The US Senate "Watergate" hearings began.
  • 1996 - President Clinton signed "Megan's Law" into effect.
