ANOTHER NIGHT OF...

BAD KARMA

What can I say? There were some nice runs, there were some short runs and there were long periods of radio silence. Very long periods.

Thought my luck was going to change though when I took over the phone at 2a. A reservation for 2 people from the Four Seasons to Ha'iku at 2:30a. That is about $100 one-way. I am staged and waiting by 2:15a. The phone rings at 2:27a. Its the Four Seasons. The parties had changed their minds.
SHIT!
Had a lot of "no-shows" also. Just one of those "learning experience" shifts, I guess.

Bar-close brought me one fare of interest. A local hauli guy. Wanted to go "Just a short way, dat-a-way." Kept trying to pin down something more than "just a short way" as we rolled north.
"Whats the street name?"

"Before da Maui Lu."

"What street?"

"Dis one."

"Can you be a little more specific?"

"By da black da kine."

"What da kine?"

"Da da kine. I tell you when we get dere."

We went all the way to the Maui Lu. The very first hotel built on the south-side of Mau'i.
"Oh, brah. You passed it."

"Passed what? You never said to turn or stop."

"I know. My bad. Turn around and I tell you to stop."
About half way back he suddenly told me to turn. Into Paradise Gardens, a residential apartment complex.

Oh, "da kine" was the 10' tall fencing required to be placed around a construction site. Made of 2x4s and black tarpaper.

7 fares / 74 miles / 3rd quarter below $100 bracket

Hope to see you tomorrow.

I GOT A BIT MIFFED

LAST NIGHT

Tina (#05) has an 8a-5p day job. Thus she can't stay until 2a as the dispatch rules require. She wanted to turn the phone over to me at midnight but I refused acceptance. I didn't like this new rotation schedule anyway and there is no way I am going to accept having to do an extra 2 hours every night she proceeds me. I told that to TMR (#27), whose bright idea this was, last week and he said that he would cover those 2 hours. Tina said over the radio that TMR said he wouldn't take it and that the owner said I HAD to do it. Funny, nobody told me that. Obviously, TMR is lying to somebody. Tina went home at 2a. I am sure she'll be on the phone to the owner first thing today.

The night started okay with a fare right out of the gate. Followed by 2 more in that first hour. All were Wailea pu-pus. Had 2 more in the 8p hour. Then it died. Nothing until bar-close, which added 2 more and the dog-watch added 3, including a 4a to OGG. That saved the night!

2 young locals from FoodLand to far north Kihei were the ride of interest. A bar-close "walk-up", one had been drinking but was well in control of himself. His buddy was ripped and aggressive. He must have had TWO beers. This future Darwin Award candidate kept trying to pick a fight with me. I just ignored his aggression and always referred to him as "Sir". He was flustered. How do you get someone to fight if they're being nice to you? Safe-n-Sane would chastise him each time he stepped over the line. Me, I was bored to death. The aspiring DTs victim was proud that:
"I have no idea where my fucking car is."
"Crazy" Brian returned last night. I guess whatever the problem was has been resolved. Said he and his girlfriend had a fantastic time in Peru and Chile. I might get to post some of the pixs he took along the way. The only thing he missed in his itinerary was the Nasca Plains, where all those gigantic lines and images are located. The ET landing strip.

His return meant that we had six cabs on the night crew and a dirth of activity. The thin pot'o'gold was diluted even further.

Some yahoo took out a power pole on Mapu Rd, the north entrance to Maui Meadows, just before 2a today. Knocked out all residential power for the top half of that sub-division, along with the traffic light at Mapu/Kilohana & Pi'ilani Hwy. MECO (Maui Electric Company) crews were still working the scene as I came home.

10 fares / 100 miles / 2nd quarter $100 bracket

I recently read that there is going to be a movie remake of the original Star Trek TV series. The individual that will be playing Spock is the same person who plays the evil Sylar on HEROES, Zachary Quinto.

I can see him in those pointed ears, being all analytical. Anyone know anymore about this?

Off to bed. Y'all have a great day, okay.

HOW I SPENT MY DAY

IT WAS REALLY (NOT) EXCITING

I slept, ate, watched TV, ate some more. Down loaded the rest of this month's THE PICTURE GALLERY images and uploaded a weeks worth to blogger.

Have to open up another g-mail account. I have filled the blogger/Picassio limits on the other 2. 2.048 gigs of images in about 19 months. I hope you have enjoyed them.

Received an e-mail invitation to Judy's next Monday night. BBQ dinner with her and her new beau, Richard. She also invited me out for my birthday next month. I think I'll take that night off work. Its a Tuesday, so I won't miss much.

Heard from the "daughter" also. She and the boys are doing fine. The oldest (14) is turning "Goth" and the youngest is nearing the end of the "terroristic threes".

Remember:
Grandchildren are a grandparents revenge

The typical "flexing of muscle" news story about police preparations for Halloween in Lahaina.

The Maui Bus is even adding special service that night.

***
All I know about this week's group is that they arrived Sunday and the reservations for Monday were loaded with folks taking early morning rides to the various small boat harbors for fishing trips. Hopefully, this desire to go/do will continue throughout the week. Of course, I must remember that early-risers seldom are late-niters.

Enjoy your day and the rest of your week.

I'll see you tomorrow.

OMG!

WAS IT SLOW

I only dispatched 37 runs from 6p-2a. By 1a I was kicking drivers loose. No sense in prolonging their agony.

Dispatched from the sofa in my TV room. Kept my voice as soft as possible, so as to not disturb my upstairs neighbor.

A former driver, "Ear-ache", has been recycled. He drives ONE-NINE from 7p-5a on Sunday and Monday nights. He is the new relief graveyard. He has a tendency to wreck cabs. I didn't know it was him until about 1/2 way through the shift. I just hope he is kind to ONE-NINE or I'll be without a ride.

Nothing in this weeks e-mailbag, so I'll just wish everyone a great week and fix myself some dinner.

DID YOU KNOW...

THE CANADIAN DOLLAR IS WORTH MORE THAN THE US DOLLAR?

$1 CAD = $1.03663 US

From memory only, I think the last time they were par was about 1964.

One more legacy in "Fearless Leader's" ability to run a country. He's been a failure his entire life. I wish we could amend the constitution to require politicians to have at least an average IQ.

Or maybe we could make the change to:
The person with the LEAST amount of votes would be REQUIRED to run the country.
We couldn't do any worse than what we have suffered through the past 43 years.

After Brandon's comment regarding the "pervert" post, I have repositioned it to follow the "explanation".

A boring night. It started good, with a fare shortly after I logged in. I caught the shirt-tail of whatever rush we had for dinner. I had a few unexpected good fares, one to Kahului, the car rental agencies, and another on a round trip to a store, from a Kihei residence. Only 9 trips by 2a.

The couple I featured yesterday, Pietrina & Bruce, needed a ride to OGG yesterday. I had suggested that they leave early, drop their bags at OGG and then continue over to Mama's Fish House for a late lunch prior to departing. A wonderful meal to add to the memories and a full tummy, thus avoiding whatever sandwich the airline would try to sell in-flight. I wasn't sure if they were going to follow my suggestion but told them I would be off-duty and they should just call and request ONE-NINE. I passed the info on to "Murph", my co-driver.

When we did the change over, a little after 4a this morning, he told me that they had called and requested ONE-NINE, and they did go to Mama's. He also got a "meet-n-greet" back to Wailea, from OGG, after dropping them. He agreed with my reaction about what a great couple they were.

12 fares / 110 miles / 3rd quarter $100 bracket

Dispatch from home again tonight. I am going to have to do it from a different room. Seems my voice is disturbing the guy who lives above me. We'll see how that goes. I only have my front room and my bedroom as alternatives.

I am also going to set my alarm before I hit the sack. Don't want a repeat of last week.

Hope you make it by tomorrow. Until we meet again:

HURRAY!!

100 FLAGS UP TOP!

Meet Bruce and Pietrina, from Royal Oak, MI USA

They just might come back next year and tie the knot. A very vivacious, loving young couple. I liked them. They leave today.

Okay, the cabbie part of the shift was a stellar performance. The dispatching part was the shits. Not that it was busy but I seemed to have left my brain on the pillow when I woke up yesterday. Lets just say that I would be generous if I awarded my self anything above a "C-". I would rate it as the worst job I've ever done as a dispatcher. Attention span, memory, attitude. Everything was wrong. I apologize to my associates, my company, et al.

I was late to start since I had to stop by the owners house and pick up the phone and portable. Less than 3 minutes after logging on I get a Wailea to Sansei. A quick $20 fare is a good way to start the "day". As I was dropping, a nice couple asked me to take them to Wailea. A "bounce-back"!

Then I took Bruce and Pietrina to dinner, returned them later. I met them on Thursday night and we just "clicked". Told them what/where all the good restaurants were. I may not do tours but I know the "night-side" of south Mau'i intimately.

Then I was in the right spot, at the right moment, to get a Wailea-OGG. $100 on the meter by 9:15p!! I just went with the flow.

A few bar-rush then the usual dead period between 11p and midnight.

A few bar-close

Dog-watch added 7 more fares to the trip sheet.

The money, and tips, were excellent.

18 fares / 140 miles / 4th quarter $200 bracket

The most popular of my recent posts, according to my trackers, was the Rush Limbaugh one of October 2nd.

Seems people, mostly (but not all) from Islamic nations, using search engines are seeking "Ass Paradise" or "Paradise Ass". I wonder how many became enamored with Ol' Rush's face?

I think I will put up a putrid porn title and see what is drawn out of the woodwork. Please don't be shocked.

***
Sunday's are now back on my schedule. Also, unless I have phone duty, I have been cleared to go straight to Lahaina for Halloween. That typically is a $300 to $500 night. The bane of that is I still need to be back in Kihei around 2a to cover the graveyard shift. Lose out on the late bar-close on Front Street.

How's your weekend going?
