Hawai'i was the 50th state to join the United States.
Saying
"Don't you ever get to 'the States'?"
Or,
"When we go back to 'the States'..."
sounds really dumb to folks who already live in "the States".
Other thoughts you might want to keep to yourself are:
"Gee, you speak good English."
"Don't you miss snow?"
"Are you a real Hawai'ian?"
"Do you accept 'American' money?"

FRIDAY'S RIDE - KIHEI SIDE
We are headed southbound on the Pi'ilani Highway (SR-31). We are about 1 mile into town. The majority of the development is on the right/makai (toward the ocean) side. The left/mauka (toward the mountain) side of the road remains mostly undeveloped.
Please excuse the bug marks.
There are over a dozen different major (20 acres or more) housing projects under construction in Kihei and Wailea.
Entering the canyon area of Wailea
Entering the developed area of Wailea.
And headed down the hill.
Thats the Shops Of Wailea.
Part of the Wailea "Blue" Golf Course.
167 new townhouses are under construction across from The Grand.
Got a spare $15,000,000?
Later.....

Wil i am on my way, put down the deposit for me will ya.I know what you mean about United States and Hawai'i. In my job i offer customers airline certificates for travel to Hawai'i, United States or Europe, like you i thought Hawai'i was one of the Fifty states. Is it possible if its said enough times you can break off and become an independent kingdom again. You would probably be better off.
These were supposed to be some of the questions put to the Sydney Olympic Committe in 2000 about visiting Australia. You could always toss this one in at a quiz night. What is the only country or state in the world that has the Union Jack in their flag and isn't part of the British Commonwealth?
Another presumtion thats always bugged me is how can Columbus have dicovered America and layed claim to it when the Native Americans were already here. Can i go claim Brazil using the same idea?
