Picked Judy up just before 6:30pm. She was all dolled up in the new dress I gave her last Monday. Looked really nice.

First stop was to get the Olympus 7.1 megapixel digital camera that was my other gift for her. Then on to dinner.

The chef at Ruth's is a friend and regular passenger. He said he had something special planned for us. We both order the petite filet and knew exactly what side dishes we wanted. Each side dish easily serves two.

Lyonnaise Potatoes is just a fancy name for "home fries".

Cy, the chef, prepared a very special veal ravioli appetizer for us. Absolutely F A N T A S T I C !

While waiting for our entre our server, Josh, stopped by to ask if either of us were allergic to shrimp.
WAY TO GO,
CY & JOSH!
Those two guys went right to the top of Judy's "Admiration Society". Thus, my steak was served with a half dozen "Jumbo" shrimp and some lobster atop it. I brought those home with me since I didn't have the heart to enjoy them in front of her and I wouldn't be able to kiss her goodnight, at the end of the evening.

We were both too stuffed for desert, but Cy sent out a beautiful cheesecake, about the size of a cereal bowl. A solitary candle glimmering from the center. The top cover in strawberrys. She took the first bite and her eyes began to radiate extreme pleasure. She gave me the next forkfull.
SKYROCKETS!!
I really like cheesecake. Never had a bad one. Some are mediocre, othes are okay. A few are really good and a very rare count are mind-blowing. That hollow sound from inside my head is where the brain used to be.

I limited myself to just that one bite. She loves cheesecake as much as I do and I wasn't going ti impinge.

Oh, while she hasn't seen her e-mails yet, she knows about them. She asked me to tell each of you thank you. She says it may take a bit but she will answer each one.

Thanks for sharing the personal reflection with me and I hope you have a wonder day.

Another brain dump tomorrow.

"SO, HOW DID YOU LIKE YOUR SURPRISE?"

"WHAT SURPRISE?"

One of the nice things about the change in management where Judy works is that she is now getting "benefits". One of these is that she gets a paid day-off for her birthday. Since her birthday is today, she decided to exercise her option yesterday.

When I asked the above question and got her response, I knew the "cat was out of the bag". Told her what to expect when she got to work on Monday. She was delighted. We were chatting on the phone and I could hear her expression change from tired to joy. Now that I think about it, that really makes the gift twice as good. She'll be elated twice by one little gesture.

Thanks all for sending a message to her. I figure she'll get between 20-50 e-mails.

Since she won't get to read them until Monday, anyone else wanting to drop her a line can do so here.

***
Last night struggled to get started.

Logged on at exactly 7:00pm and had the phone by 7:02pm. Most of the drivers were on runs and it was just a simple matter of catching up on their whereabouts. Started with 8 cabs, which shortly became 6 as the 2 day-shift holdovers threw in the towel, due to lack of significant activity. Of the 6 of us assigned to work, we just sat, with an occasional "pu-pu". Tina (#5) fielded the only OGG we had last night. After how bad it was for her on Thursday, I was happy. She is a great cabbie. I'll miss her if she ever leaves and, eventually, everyone does leave. Kimo is our most senior driver and has been with Royal for 11 or 12 years. I am 4th in seniority and am in my 6th year. The drivers between us have, maybe, one year over me. Maui Jim is just a couple of months behind me and then we jump to the next group with 2 years or less. We have also hired on some other new ones this year.

The hardest thing to teach the gnubees is to actually use the two-way radio and use it properly. When most of a driver's income is via radio dispatch, you would think that they would understand this. Unfortunately, they forget to call in their pick-ups, drop-offs and positional status checks. A dispatcher can't preplan if he has no idea where and what a cab is doing.

I have a way of dealing with this. I will remind a driver about the procedure a maximum of three times. Which seems fair. If the bad habit continues, I just ignore the fact that they even exist until they ask why they are being by-passed on runs. This typically suffices. Eventually, usually after driving for a month, every night driver has to shoulder their load of the phone duty. Since this is an unpaid function, its not fair to let just a few do it. Dispatching also helps a driver learn where all the streets are, why proper radio procedure is so vital and how hard it is translating "tourist speak", pidgin and heavy (very heavy) Asian accents. The learning curve isn't that steep but it does have to be mastered.

We really didn't start moving until 9:30pm. Most of the traffic was inbound bar runs. There were the occasional Wailea "pu-pu" runs from various hotels to Mulligans-on-the-Blue. A lot of the hotels have some "hot-shot" sales groups on award trips, with a smattering of business thrown in for the tax write-off. Usually in their early 30's, they think they have the world at their feet. Sadly, quite a few will have had the globe roll over them within the next 5 years.

We were never swamped. The calls were easily manageable and there never was a moment when I got backed up on calls. Every one was covered within 10 minutes, and the majority had 5 minute or less response time. That makes for a pleasant night.

***

Gas prices went up again yesterday. This really hurts the cab business. On the mainland, the oil companies say this late spring price adjustment is due to them having to make more gas to stockpile for the coming summer travel season. I don't believe it but I'll live with that reasoning. The problem I have with it here in Hawai'i is that all of our gasoline is refined on O'ahu and the volume of sales stays pretty steady. I can't think of one person who ever drove their car to Hawai'i for their vacation. True, population growth does increase the demand each year but that is a pretty stable curve. We don't have the seasonal variations that the mainland has. The oil company's rationale for stockpiling fuel oil in the Fall for the approaching Winter doesn't hold water in Hawai'i. We have no heaters (of any kind) in the vast majority of the homes and all the fuel oil and bunker oil is needed for industrial/maritime usage. This demand is very stable, year round. The biggest refiner is Chevron (Standard Oil of California), Hawai'i. The Hawai'i operation is just 10% of all of Chevron's business yet produces 25% of the Corporate "bottom line". That's not very kosher.

After listening to the news, I am hoping some of you are considering a little "R&R" on Mau'i soon. Spring snowfalls, tornadoes, and a blasting cold wave this late in the year might just give you that little nudge to take the leap.

Sunday, April 15th, marks the unofficial end of our "Winter Tourist Season" and also "Whale Season". From then until June 15th things are going to really slow down (oh, gawd!). We start seeing the summer vacationers about then. Though they really don't arrive "in force" until the Fourth of July. If we follow history, we should stay very busy from then until Labor Day (September 3rd). The way our "High Winter Season" went, I am not holding my breath.

Thanks for dropping over.

See ya tomorrow. God willing and the creek don't rise.

THE GOOD NEWS IS...

I BROKE $100 ON THE METER LAST NIGHT

The bad news is that I BARELY broke $100.

An agonizingly slow shift.

About a hour into the night I had my first run from Wailea to OGG. A nice early-20's kid from the "Bay Area", in California. A very pleasant, geeky, kind of kid. His grandparents own a condo up on the Kapalua side of Mau'i. When I mentioned that he just might inherit it someday, he paused and reflected. His silence announcing that he hadn't really comtemplated that grandma and grandpa would not always be around. He gave a barely audible gasp and whispered,
"I hadn't thought about that before. I could get the condo. Its all paid for. Man, I'd love to live here forever."
I am not familiar with the current prices of real estate in that area. Also, there are many, many condo complexes, of varying quality. A safe guess is that the condo is worth between $500k and $2M.

Compared to the rest of the night crew, I didn't do too bad. Poor Tina (#05) only had one run the entire shift. Her take home, not including tip, was about $8. "Crazy" Brian (#11) packed it in early, leaving just ONE-NINE, TMR (#27) and a new driver, Jason (#21). I knew I was far ahead of both of them on the meter and pulled myself out of the line-up to give them a fighting chance to earn something for the night. Sadly I didn't miss much.

Only one short "pu-pu" during the quiet hours.

Prim (#22) checked in extremely early, shortly after 3:15am. A new day Driver, Wally (#05) was on-board by 4:00am and Flor (#27) was ready by 4:15am. Our next scheduled run wasn't until 6:00am, so I called "pau hana". Home by 4:30am.

If you get the chance, drop my best friend, Judy, an e-mail today and wish her a Happy Birthday. I think she'll get a kick out of it. Wouldn't you?

YOU KNOW...

IT REALLY SHOULDN'T BE THIS HARD

I have been trying to log into blogger to create today's post for almost 40 minutes. The more they "fix" things, the worse it works.

***
As usual, A slow start to the night. There were 7 other cabs on the road when I logged in. That was 4 more than we could even conceivably have a need for. My first trip was a "pu-pu" from Joe's Bar and Grill back to The Grand. Less than 1 mile and less than $6.00. The cab behind me got a Grand to Sansei ($15.50). Worked my way to the top of the queue again and got a Shops to The Grand for a whopping $4.40.
"Here's $5, keep the change."
Yeah, fuck you very much, too. The cab queued behind went to Roy's.

Finally get sent to Kihei, to pick up a daddy and "tween" daughter from Sansei, back to The Grand.

Had one more "town" run after that and then business literally died. I had a grand total of $37.10 on the meter for 4 hours worth of effort. It was time to re-group.

I went home and took a nap. Came back out at 1:00am. Now there were just three of us left. The day-shift poachers and night-time casual "wanna-be" cabbies had finally gave up.

Pulled into the "Triangle" and got flagged to north Kihei. Returned and was immediately flagged again to even further north Kihei.

Returned to the "Triangle" and had just taken the phone from Kimo (#22) when two blokes hopped in and wanted to go to the ship (Pride Of Hawaii) in Kahului. Half way there, the guy in the left rear pukes. 99.9% of the ejecta exited via his window. Very little to clean up. Always be thankful for small favors.

Closed out the shift with a 4:45am from The Grand to OGG, which put me out the door with a halfway decent meter.

***
I want to thank Blogger for making today's edition so late to the streets. Good work, guys.

As always, I thank all of you for dropping by and don't forget to please surprise my friend Judy with a whole passle of birthday greetings tomorrow.

Just click this link to e-mail her.

How old is she? I'll just say that she is older than her children and younger than her parents.

WHAT AN ABSOLUTELY

GORGEOUS DAY!

This morning's sunrise
My "Silver Trumpet" in the first rays of sunshine
***
The shift started off slow, as is the norm nowadays. Did 5 runs by 2:00am and then did 5 more between then and 6:30am. 75% of my meter came from those last 5, during my solo hours. Finally arrived home just before 7:00am. A 12 hour shift.

My last 2 fares were from the Maui Coast Hotel to OGG. The first was a scheduled 4:45am run and the second was to cover for another taxi company that had failed to make a 5:30am pickup.

The construction still continues on the Mokulele Highway (SR-311) and those bright lights that I have mentioned before still blind you as you approach the transition from the old road to the by-pass detour.
***
The "Triangle" was pretty quiet. This is looking across the FoodLand parking lot towards LAB.
A good example of what we affectionately term a "Maui Cruiser".
Just after I started my shift, I rolled over the 80,000 mile mark on the odometer. You might also note that whoever the previous driver of ONE-NINE was left me with 1/4 tank of gas. Thats chicken-shit.
And gas prices continue climbing.
***
Those 87 flags that I have at the top of this blog are shown on this map. That represents 38% of the nations on this planet.
***
Not a lot to write about today. After 12 hours, I am bushed. Hope the above pics suffice to replace my normal drivel.

I did leave work a very "happy camper".
